The Falmouth Experience

Having spent the last two years studying at the University of Exeter in Falmouth has been an incredible journey, and I can confidently say that even now, I still find new places to explore every day. Falmouth, and Cornwall as a whole, has a unique charm that keeps you coming back for more, reminding me of home with the added excitement of a new environment.

One of the things I love most about Falmouth is how similar it is to home. With its relaxed pace shops close early, around 5pm on weekdays, and many don’t even open on Sundays. This schedule encourages you to embrace a slower lifestyle, which isn’t typical for a university town, and it suits me just fine. Plus, being surrounded by beaches that are almost as great as the views back home like Gylly and Swanpool is a constant reminder that you’re in a truly special place. The diversity of the people here, from goth alternatives and LGBTQ+ to book lovers and adventure seekers, makes it feel like there’s a place for everyone. And the food scene? There’s something for everyone, even if that place is in the kitchen.

When I do my weekly grocery shopping at Tesco or Asda, I make sure to hop on a train to Truro, a nearby town, to visit the international shop. It’s where I find all my cooking essentials, like ripe plantains, Maggi seasoning, and scotch bonnet peppers to name a few. It’s a little taste of home that I can’t find in regular supermarkets.

If you decide to study at Exeter or Falmouth University, one spot you shouldn’t miss is Pendennis Point. It’s the perfect place to watch the sunrise or sunset, offering breathtaking views that make you forget about the six-hour journey from London. It’s one of those places that just sticks with you.

Despite its charm, Falmouth isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking for a city university or a faster-paced environment, this might not be the place for you. The six-hour journey alone isn’t for the weak, and the laid-back vibe isn’t for everyone. But for those who enjoy discovering hidden gems and exploring a new town every week, Falmouth is a fantastic choice.

Exeter University itself offers a wealth of societies and support, whether personal or academic. The campus has a myriad of places to hang out or study, and the food trucks are a lifesaver if you’re a “picky” eater like me who enjoys well-seasoned dishes. They serve everything from pulled pork chips to bbq chicken wraps that which are a lot more exciting than they sound, trust!

In conclusion, my time in Falmouth has been a mix of challenges and rewards. The slow pace, stunning beaches, and welcoming community have made it feel like a home away from home. If you’re considering studying here, know that there’s always something new to discover or create, and the rewards of embracing the unknown are definitely worth it. So, if you’re looking for a sign to take the plunge and study here, this is it.
