As we approach the 2025 election, I would like to take the time to encourage all eligible young Caymanians to get registered to vote. We often hear that the future of these islands is in our hands and this sentiment could not be truer. We are the next generation of leaders, innovators, and lifelong citizens of the Cayman Islands. As young Caymanian’s we need to actively create the future that we want to see. We need to have a say in the decisions that directly affect our futures, and this begins with voting. Registering to vote is one of the most powerful ways to make your voice heard. In this blog post I will share some of the reasons youth voter registration is so crucial.

Young Caymanian’s represent a diverse and dynamic part of the population, with fresh ideas and new perspectives. However, as of October 1st, 2024, there were only 929 registered voters between the ages of 18-24. Due to this disproportion in voter age, issues that affect young people can be ignored or overlooked by policymakers as we do not currently make up the majority. When young people do not vote, the voices of older generations are amplified, and policies that benefit them will be prioritized over those that benefit future generations. We must ensure that our voices are heard if we want to see any real change within these islands. Your vote is a tool for ensuring better representation in the political landscape. As a young person, your perspective is incredibly valuable. When young people take part in the election process, we send a clear message that our opinions matter.

The issues at stake today such as cost of living, education and sustainable development will directly impact our future. We as young people will endure the consequences of decisions made today. The decisions made by politicians will not only affect older generations—they will impact our future life choices, career opportunities, and quality of life. By getting registered and voting, you ensure that your priorities are taken seriously, and your voice is part of shaping the Cayman that you will inherit. Which is why it is so incredibly important that we as young Caymanian’s get registered to vote.

When more young people get registered to vote and actively participate in the election process, we begin to create a culture that amplifies young voices. This in turn will set an example for younger siblings, friends etc. Your decision to vote will show future generations that expressing their right to vote is a priority and that their voices matter. You are not just shaping your future, but you are also helping to create a culture of participation for the generations to come.

Although registering to vote can seem daunting it is incredibly easy! It can be done online at: https://portal.elections.ky/index.php/home/registration.
