Student members of Cayman Connection and Cayman Islands Government scholars enjoyed an evening reception at the Cayman Islands Government Office in the UK hosted by H.E. The Governor of the Cayman Islands Martyn Roper OBE and Hon André Ebanks, Minister for Financial Services & Commerce and Minister for Investment, Innovation & Social Development on Wednesday 18 May.
The Cayman Islands Government visiting delegation joined the event to meet and network with students, including Hon Katherine Ebanks-Wilks MP, Parliamentary Secretary, & Deputy Speaker of the House, Deborah Bodden, CIG Representative to the EU, Gene DaCosta CIG Representative to Asia.
The reception provided opportunities for networking, socialising and learning about the activities of the visiting Government delegation to the EU, as well as H.E. The Governor’s attendance at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s Leadership Conference for Ambassadors and Governors which included conversations about Cuban refugees, Climate Change, hurricanes and issues affecting Caymanians overseas such as visas and passports.
Students shared stories of their studies and successes in the UK, met and talked with the delegation members, and joined new and old friends in a home from home environment.
“Having the chance to meet and speak with the Governor, Minister Ebanks and visiting delegation was an invaluable experience that I will cherish, as well as reconnecting and meeting students and new people who share a connection with Cayman.”
Alice Narborough, Student in London.
“This reception was a lovely opportunity to see new and familiar faces here in the UK. Being able to learn about what other Caymanians have accomplished during their studies is inspiring and I look forward to following their journeys over the next few years.”
Zoe Connolly Basdeo, Cayman Connection Lead Student Ambassador for London and the South
Kate Kandiah, Director of Cayman Connection commented, “It is always inspiring to work with Hon Andre Ebanks MP who is, as ever, keen to engage with and ensure that Caymanians overseas, particularly students and graduates, are considered in Government conversations. I am excited about the ideas of Hon. Katherine Ebanks-Wilks, MP, who is keen to be more involved with Cayman Connection, to connect, guide and assist Caymanians travelling to live overseas for the first time. I look forward to furthering those conversations. An absolute pleasure to meet with Gene DaCosta and Deborah Bodden and to hear about the recent delegation visits to the EU.”
“I love having more great conversations with inspiring students, hearing their stories and updates, out of which we have come up with some new ways to develop networking skills for members to benefit their career development, and had a brainstorm about how Cayman Connection, and our corporate partners, can help. We also now have new marketing members for our growing Cayman Connection team!”
