Mr Bush, formerly the Chief Officer in the Ministry of Home Affairs, has reinvented the London Office, and its functions and opportunities for the Cayman Islands in the UK and the EU.

According to Mr Bush, the first area of concentration is to improve relationships and create partnerships with the UK and the EU.  Secondly, he aims to enhance the UK and EU experience and create better opportunities for Caymanian students and Caymanians living in the UK and EU.

The third function of his office is to promote Cayman Islands businesses within the UK and Europe.

“Fourth, but certainly not least important, to create opportunities and identify synergies within Her Majesty’s Government for benefit to the Cayman Islands Civil Service,” he said.

Mr Bush is the second Caymanian to hold this post, Jennifer Dilbert being the first; she served from 2000 to 2008.  Former Cayman Islands Governor, Col. Thomas Russell, CMG, CBE, who recently passed away, was the first representative of the office; he served in that role from 1982 to 1990 after completing his terms as Governor of the Cayman Islands from 1974 to 1981.

Mr Bush will attend the funeral of former Governor Russell, which is scheduled for Thursday 4 August in Scotland, where he will pass on condolences on behalf of the Cayman Islands.

The Caymanian civil servant commenced his duties in London on 4 July, which was Constitution Day in Cayman.  Former Overseas Territories Minister James Duddridge and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) offered to fly the Cayman Islands flag in London in recognition of Cayman’s Constitution Day, Mr Bush said.

Speaking briefly on the recent changes in UK politics, Mr. Bush said, “I congratulate the new Prime Minister Theresa May as well as new Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Rt Hon Baroness Anelay of St Johns DBE, who has specific responsibilities for the Overseas Territories.”

The new London Office head is on a three-year contract in London along with his wife and children.  His European-born wife, Laetitia, works at Walkers and transferred to the global law firm’s London offices.

Look out for future stories in The Cayman Reporter on the London Office, which will highlight more details on each of the areas of concentration for Mr Bush in his new role.
