Student Health Advisory – Meningitis

(UK STUDENTS)

March 2026

Cayman Connection is aware of recent reports of meningitis cases affecting students and young people in parts of the UK. Our thoughts are with those impacted and their families during this difficult time.

We would like to reassure our Caymanian student community that while cases such as these are taken very seriously, meningitis remains relatively rare. However, awareness, early recognition of symptoms, and preventative action are key to staying safe.

What you should know:

Meningitis can present with symptoms such as:

  • Severe headache
  • Fever
  • Neck stiffness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating

If you experience any of these symptoms, particularly in combination, seek medical attention immediately.

Preventative guidance:

  1. Ensure your vaccinations are up to date, particularly the MenB vaccine, as this is the suspected strain reported. The MenACWY vaccine is also important for protection against other strains.
  2. Maintain good hygiene practices, including regular hand washing
  3. Avoid sharing drinks, utensils, or personal items
  4. Stay informed through official guidance channels

NHS Registration & Meningitis Vaccination Guide (UK Students)

How to Register with the NHS (GP Registration)

If you’re studying in the UK, you are entitled to NHS care if you’ve paid the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of your visa.

Step-by-step:

  1. Find a local GP (doctor) near you
  2. Register with the GP surgery
    • Online via the GP website
    • Or in person at reception
    • You can usually register:
  3. You will need:
    • Passport
    • UK address (student accommodation is fine)
    • Student ID (sometimes requested)
    • NHS number (if you already have one – not essential)
  4. Once registered, you’ll be able to:
    • Book appointments
    • Access vaccinations
    • Get referrals if needed

Registration is free and you do NOT need proof of address in all cases — you cannot be refused for not having it.

How to Book a Meningitis Vaccination (MenB vaccination)

Who should get it?

  • Students under 25 years old, especially those:
    • Going to university for the first time
    • Living in halls/shared accommodation

1. Book privately (most common route)
The MenB vaccine is widely available via:

  • Private GP clinics
  • Travel clinics
  • Pharmacies

Typical process:
Book online / by phone
Attend clinic for injection

Cost:
£100–£120 per dose (2 doses needed)

2. Use high-street pharmacy services

Large UK pharmacy chains offer MenB vaccination services:
Appointment booking online
Walk-in (sometimes limited due to demand)

Example:
Boots offers a full 2-dose MenB course privately

Important right now: Due to the Kent outbreak, stock shortages are being reported, so book early.

3. Book via travel clinics / specialist vaccine clinics

These are often the fastest option if pharmacies are full

You can:

  • Search “MenB vaccine near me”
  • Book online same-week appointments

Many clinics allow:

  • Non-UK nationals
  • Self-referral (no GP needed)
  • Check your university directly

4. Universities sometimes:
Run on-campus vaccination clinics
Send outbreak-specific instructions

Especially relevant if you’re in or near Kent / Canterbury

Plan the dosing schedule

MenB requires:

  • 2 doses (minimum 4 weeks apart)
  • Protection builds quickly, but you are not fully protected after 1 dose

Important Tips

  • You may have already received MenACWY in school — check your records
  • Protection is especially important in shared student housing
  • Vaccination reduces risk but does not replace awareness of symptoms

…………………………………………………………………………………………..

We strongly encourage all Caymanian students in the UK to take a moment to familiarise themselves with the symptoms and guidance above, and to check their vaccination status where possible.

At Cayman Connection, your wellbeing remains our priority. If you have any concerns, questions, or are feeling anxious about this news, please do not hesitate to reach out.
