From Fresher to Final Year: What I Learned (So You Don’t Have To)

Student Ambassador (UK)

I’ve officially finished Uni! Three years of countless assignments, late-night study sessions, and more personal growth than I ever imagined. As a Caymanian student studying abroad in the UK (at the University for the Creative Arts), I want to share my real, unfiltered experience from the nerves of my first year to the final push in my third year.

Whether you’re just starting or nearing the end, here’s what I learned along the way:

Year 1: The Scary (But Exciting) Beginning

Moving from our small island to an entirely new country was terrifying. Everything felt unfamiliar: the weather, the culture, transportation and even the grocery stores! But here’s what I wish I’d known:

  • It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Everyone is adjusting, even if they don’t show it.
  • Get involved early. Join clubs, make friends from all backgrounds,7 attend socials, and try things you’d never do back home. (Yes, even if it’s intimidating at first.)
  • Your accent is part of your identity. Don’t dim your light embrace it! I got many compliments on our accent, which became a conversation starter.

Pro Tip: Travel when you can! You’re already halfway across the world, exploring the UK and beyond. I started with UK cities and eventually ventured across Europe.

Year 2: Finding Your Groove

By the second year, the initial fear fades, but new challenges pop up. Here’s how I navigated it:

  • Balance is key. Social life, job, academics, and self-care all matter, so don’t neglect one for the other.
  • Save money wisely. Find a weekend/summer job, shop at affordable stores. Aldi became my best friend (remember that £1 coin for the shopping cart!).
  • Use student discounts. Railcards, UNiDAYS, Student Beans and Trainline app deals saved me so much.
  • Start networking early. Update your LinkedIn and connect with classmates, professors, and professionals in your field. You never know who might help you land an internship later!
  • Research internship deadlines. Some competitive programs close applications months in advance and don’t wait until the last minute.

This is also the year I really started to own my voice in class discussions, creative projects, and even casual conversations.

Year 3: The Final Push

The final year is challenging. You’re tired, under pressure, and just ready to be done. But it’s also where you grow the most.

  • Start early. Procrastination hits differently when deadlines loom.
  • Ask for feedback. Lecturers are there to help use their expertise.
  • Celebrate small wins. Finished a tough assignment? Treat yourself.

Most importantly, trust your process. You didn’t come this far to give up now.

Final Thoughts

I didn’t have it all figured out. I still don’t. But I showed up, stayed grounded, and made it through, and so will you.

Your uni journey isn’t just about earning a degree. It’s about the person you become along the way. And trust me, that person is capable of amazing things.

You got this 💛
