Virtual Yard Chats are always full of surprises, whether it is the individuals who enter the Yard, the topics for discussion or the personal stories shared in this special space.
The 26 October meeting was no different, with attendees – familiar and new – giving the group of mixed ages a view into achievements and aspirations, from graduation dates on the horizon to exciting trips planned to Sweden to experience the Northern Lights and to meet family in Namibia. The meeting allowed for an exploration of the career paths and interests of attendees, including coaching, international relations and international law, environmental science, human rights law, and assisting in care homes. Winter blues also featured followed by tried-and-true recommendations such as SAD lamps and vitamin supplements to keep the blues at bay.
An interesting talk about the Scottish university system and UK tuition fees enlightened several in the group, and Brexit and British politics inevitably entered discussions (along with mention of the Cayman Islands dollar’s value to the British pound more recently). A topic that will be further expanded upon in next week’s Chat – the many reasons Caymanians leave home to the UK and elsewhere – also led to poignant conversation about the high cost of living in the Cayman Islands, and the need for it to be addressed so Caymanians aren’t forced to leave home.
There is always laughter, especially when food is mentioned (i.e. mayonnaise seems to be an overused ingredient by some in the UK and REAL macaroni and cheese – not in a tin – is a treasure when you find it!) and news (Cayman Day is coming up soon!), but there is also opportunity for honest conversations about the challenges faced by our people living overseas. As always, the meeting was delightful – come out if you want need a bit of community in your life right now.
Warmest regards,
Rita
