Jawara Alleyne:
“Since leaving the islands in 2012 I’ve been on a journey of self discovery through my work. My final show at the National Gallery in Cayman was entitled ‘Journey’ because I understood that the experience I was about to go on was going to be just this. Closing this journey by finishing my studies and showing my first collection at London Fashion Week has called me to reflect on what this achievement means.

A common misconception of designers is that our job is to make clothes but really our job is to research, to ask questions, to tell stories, to inspire and sometimes even to call on feeling of discomfort that asks viewers and customers to think through clothing. There’s such rich history in the clothes we wear even in the Caribbean and fashion design, really if nothing more; is the social study of people through the garments they wear. It’s sociology, anthropology, political science, sometimes even psychology.

My collection which just launched at London Fashion Week is called ‘(Self) Made Man’ is a series of questions that Re-Presents versions of ourselves that we don’t often see reflected, to remind us that our identity is constructed.

I’ve woven Caribbean culture into my hand-writing and I’m heavily inspired by old-carnival which was about storytelling and masquerade. When you take apart the layers of my collection you can see clearly the influence of Caribbean culture on the international catwalk through my method of design, choice of fabrics, and the stories built around the characters I’ve created.

This collection is only the start for me and now that I’m leaving university I’m excited to represent a Caribbean voice on the international catwalk.”
