Moving to Falmouth – FAQ

Nightlife/Socializing

What is the nightlife in Falmouth like?
Falmouth is a university town, so despite its small size, it boasts a wide selection of bars and clubs. Keep an eye out for student discounts and drink deals, as there are plenty available, making it an affordable way to have a good time. Here are some places you can check out:

Mangos Falmouth
Toast of Falmouth
The Cornish Bank

Additionally, university societies offer a variety of nights out, game nights, and sports-related events, providing opportunities to have fun and meet new people.

Healthcare

How do I register with the National Health Service (NHS)?
As a student, the process of registering with the National Health Service is straightforward, especially during “Freshers Week.” You will have the opportunity to register with the local surgery on the same day. If you miss this opportunity, locate your nearest surgery and fill out the online form, which will require your passport. Once registered with your surgery, you can download the NHS app to book appointments and order prescriptions.

Also, remember that the national emergency numbers are 999 and 112 for emergency response services.

Driving in the UK

Can I drive in the UK with my foreign driver’s license, or do I need a UK driver’s license?
While getting around Cornwall via public transport, such as the Great Western Railway and First Bus, is an option, having a car can be highly convenient. To legally drive in the UK, you must submit a D1 form (UK Driving License (Exchange) Application).

For detailed information, please refer to the Cayman Connection’s step-by-step guide on “How To Exchange a Cayman Islands Driver’s License.”

Homesickness

How can I deal with homesickness and adjust to life in Cornwall?
To cope with homesickness, I recommend staying in touch with family and friends. Additionally, consider creating a “care basket” to take with you, including items like Cayman Islands National Museum’s Student Care Packages (flag included), your favorite seasonings, and frozen patties. Lastly, while no beach can compare to our crystal-clear waters, be sure to visit a local beach to ease the feeling of being away from home.

Storage

Where can I locate storage solutions in Cornwall for my belongings?
When deciding where and how to store your items before summer break, consider whether you want self-storage or a storage service. Think about:

Do I want to pack the storage unit myself?
Do I have a car to transport my boxes?
How long will I need to store my items?

For storage services, you can explore options like LoveSpace and The Box Co, which are available across the UK.
