Waste Not: Rethinking Waste II is a quarter three Environment & Sustainability Virtual Yard event, focused on waste, home and society. 

On Wednesday 31 August at 12pm EST, 6pm BST, Cayman Connection members are invited to the Virtual Yard for a follow-up discussion on waste management in the Cayman Islands.  

This event will feature Cayman Islands representatives from the Ministry of Sustainability & Climate Resiliency, ReGen, the Department of Environmental Health, Local Market (Resilience Cayman), Plastic Free Cayman and Amplify Cayman, all of whom are working towards resolving issues concerning waste.  

Attendees are encouraged to share thoughts and ask questions throughout the presentations which will look at the ReGen contract negotiations, the single-use plastics legislation, and a broader conversation about waste management to include local businesses.

Local Market is an initiative by Resilience Cayman to support local farmers and artisans by providing them with an online marketplace to sell their products and services direct to the consumer.  It ties in to food security, and local economic sustainability for families.

Richard Simms 

Mr. Richard Simms joined the DEH in 2018 as the acting Director. His excellent performance paved the road for his confirmation on the position a year later. He was previously confirmed as Director of the Department of Vehicle and Equipment Services in January 2014. The former long-serving police officer was originally seconded to that role from the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing, where he spent several years as Deputy Director.

He attended the International College of the Cayman Islands where he obtained an Associates of Science Degree in Business Administration, in December 1998. He earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Criminal Justice and Police Management, University of Leicester UK, December 2006. He later obtained a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from the International College of the Cayman Islands in December 2008.

In 2000, he was awarded the Commissioner Commendation for excellent service in 2000. He later became the recipient of a Queen Jubilee Medal in 2005 and in 2020a he was awarded Certificate and Badge of Honor for his service in Public Health and to the people of the Cayman Islands.

Richard McAree

Richard McAree is an experienced commercial and market development executive and environmental advisor with 25 years experience and an excellent track record in providing leadership and support to government and industry clients in the delivery of effective, value-add solutions to environmental and sustainable infrastructure projects.

He is currently supporting the development of sustainable infrastructure in the Cayman Islands. Currently focused on the successful delivery of the Integrated Solid Waste Management System – ReGen.ky
